Winter warmers

Crispy Broccoli & Potato Stacks

If you are feeling a pinch in your tootsies, and your nose is a bit Rudolph-like, you need to get cooking so you fill your house with inviting smells and draw everyone into the warm kitchen to sup, sip and be merry.

Here you go then, some ideas to warm you up:

Crispy Broccoli & Potato Stacks

These are outrageously popular – and why shouldn’t they be, all gorgeously golden and crusty (and full of goodness!).

Smokies

No, this is not something you roll up, but certainly something you roll up to! Little crispy-topped smoked fish pies that a 3 year-old could put together (well, if the ingredients were made of playdough, but you get the idea).

Chicken Pie

Pastry in summer? Nah, I usually suffer the guilts, but in winter, bring it on. I need those calories to fire my engine and keep me warm head to toe. This, by the way (or BTW in modern speak), is my best-ever chicken pie recipe.

Fried Cauliflower with Olives & Herbs

Oh Lordy! One of life’s delicious moments. You’ve got to try this.

Pea Soup with Spicy Sprinkle

This may sound a little ho-hum, but it is anything but. Simple, yes, calling for not much more than a bag of frozen peas, it’s thick, warming, intriguing, with layers of flavour, and CHEAP to make.

Barley & Cavolo Nero Gratin

This just goes to show that good old-fashioned cooking can’t be beat. A simple ingredient like barley so easily makes a fab mid-week winter main course. Do it!

Rhubarb, Apple & Ginger Crumble

This will bring them running. Whole oats, coconut and almonds on top of tender fruit, the sweetness offset with a gingery zing.

Note

Tootsies, footsies, foot-fingers, pegs, toe-pegs all equal toes …HaHa!
