CurriedFish

Waiheke has been a busy place this last week with the opening of a new shopping block that is now home to the new supermarket, and where you will also find the Te Matuku Fish Shop among other businesses. The supermarket is huge but with a comparatively small fresh produce section. Raw, a specialty produce shop located behind the new supermarket is due to open its expanded shop in a matter of weeks, and sorry supermarket, but it is still the place to go for produce (perhaps that was the intention, to co-exist). I have to say it is great to have new trolleys that will go where you push them (instead of having a mind of their own) and to have wider aisles, but it is going to be murder getting in and out of the underground carpark during peak times.

The Te Matuku fish shop, home to the famed Te Matuku Bay oysters, is a beauty. It’s a big bright well designed space, and you’ll find an expanded product range including a take-out section with fresh salads, fish pies and sushi, and seafood chowder and various soups with a fishy theme. If you’re cooking from scratch, there’s everything you need to prepare fish and serve with it, including panko crumbs, spice rubs, hot chilli-based sauces and those based on mayo such as aioli. Smoked fish and shellfish is set to become a specialty at Te Matuku. More soon.
