Goodbye luncheon sausage

Chickpeas

I’ve hated this stuff forever. It’s like a smelly sweaty dog roll, and suspiciously pink, and I have never, I repeat, NEVER eaten it (maybe once I tried it as a kid and vomited it back up, opting for self-preservation, HAHA, over preserved food!) and I NEVER fed it to my kids. They have led a luncheon meat-free life, and I am proud of it. Why? Because it is an over-processed hunk of no good that we would all be better off without. A quick sandwich filler? Pfiff! Make it vegetable based, with homemade hummus or natural peanut butter, cucumber, lettuce and mint. Tasty. Protein-rich. Low salt. No preservatives. No binding agents. No stuff to keep it looking ‘pink’. Nothing added to prevent it forming harmful bacteria. Nothing required to make it last for weeks. Just good food. When it is off, you can tell by looking at it (food that has been tinkered with can fool us sometimes). If you find ready-made hummus expensive, and you are thinking, well, it’s got preservative in it so what am I banging on about … then make your own. A bag of chickpeas costs next to nothing. Make a big batch and freeze it in small containers. Thaw as required. It’ll cost a fraction of the price of ready-made hummus and you will know all you have in it is chickpeas, tahini (nutritious sesame paste), garlic, olive oil and lemon juice. Healthy.

So, here’s a challenge, if you are a luncheon sausage muncher, make a pact with yourself to rid it from your diet in 2018. That will be one processed food out of your life. Baby steps …
