Oats are good for us, we know that, and porridge is a great winter staple, but did you know you can use them raw with yoghurt and fruit? Why pay heaps for expensive muesli when you can assemble your preferred ingredients and create a bowl of deliciousness to set you off on your day. Actually, a bowl of goodness like this will last you all day! Or, have it for lunch.
My fave combo is golden kiwifruit, banana, hazelnuts, coconut flakes (chips), blueberries or freeze-dried blackcurrants and raw wholegrain oats.
I swap the kiwifruit for strawberries in summer, the hazelnuts for Brazil nuts from time to time, add fresh raspberries and freeze-dried raspberry powder for a change, and sometimes add pumpkin and sunflower seeds for more crunch. Puffed quinoa is another good addition … and you can probably think of dozens more. I like to keep my mix sharp, rather than sweet. Both banana and coconut add sweetness, so there’s no need for honey, but you could add date syrup or maple syrup for extra sweetness if that’s your buzz. Raspberries add a delicious fruity tang, and frozen raspberries work just as well (squash a couple with a fork in the bottom of the bowl). Have a play and see what works for you. You’ll be covering off your daily vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants in one bowl.
