Tamarillos Baked with Maple Syrup

—

27 August 2019 BY Julie Biuso
SERVES: 6

Tamarillos Baked with Maple Syrup

No-fuss stunning dessert.

Ingredients
—

6 large plump tamarillos 2 Tbsp genuine maple syrup, plus more for serving 1 orange (or mandarin) Cream, crème fraiche or ice cream for serving

Method
—

1 Preheat oven to 150°C (300°F). Line a shallow ovenproof tray like a swiss roll tin/jellyroll pan) with baking (parchment) paper.

2 Cut tamarillos lengthways, leaving stalks on. Transfer to tray cut side up. Spoon maple syrup over cut surfaces, letting it pool. Grate a little orange zest over each tamarillo half with a citrus zester. Bake tamarillos for 15 minutes, until they are  nice and plump looking. Remove from oven and serve warm with cream, crème fraiche or vanilla ice cream.

Recipe Notes

Maple syrup sweetens this tangy fruit and a little orange zest adds magic. The flesh nearest the skin is bitter, so only dig deep if the flavour appeals – or swamp with more Maple syrup and cream (the way to go I reckon!).

You could serve these with a loose biscuit crumble (just bake off a crumble mixture on a shallow tray), or some kind of homemade cookie crumbled over the top.

Read your recipe – made them tonight!! Absolutely gorgeous! Will be doing them often, maybe more often, while they are still around. Thank you for this wonderful fruit dish. I kept one for my smoothie in the morning. :))

Hi Mary, that’s great to hear. I haven’t tried them with yellow tamarillos but think they will also be lovely.Hope the smoothie was yummy.

    Hi Julie

Have had no appetite for the best part of a year due to medical treatment . I remembered hearing an interview with you on RNZ when you spoke about jacket potatoes. Looked up your site and actually made a shopping list. Tonight will be jacket potatoes for
three teenagers and their parents with tamarillos for pudding. Will be interesting to see if I actually eat something.
    Thank you Julie
    Regards
    Christine
