A charity feast for 300

Last Friday’s amazing effort – the Ladies Lunch, a fundraiser for Totara Hospice South Auckland– was a huge success, raising more than $20,000.00 (they’re still counting). It was a pleasure to be involved. I met Will! Will Martin! He’s so lovely. He may look like he’s about 18 but he’s got a huge international career going on. Even so, he gave up his time to entertain everyone. Choice. There are so many people and companies who assist and sponsor Totara Hospice and it really shows community spirit at its best.

Learners from Alfriston College prepared the lunch under the care of the inimitable Grant Allen.

I did a quick demo – actually showing how easy and versatile labna is, and how to make my fave 3-minutes meal with eggs with sage, garlic, chilli and New Zealand spinach (ain’t no one going to say they don’t have time to cook on my watch!). My message was cook from scratch – know what you are buying and where it comes from – grow what you can yourself (my spinach is growing in large pots) and cut down on packaging (remember those shopping bags!). Pretty much what I hark on about on these pages. But it is all well intentioned, and topical, of course.

You can flick through the photos and see how we got on. It might inspire you to give your time to a charity near you.

    1. Hi Kathy, have you got NZ spinach growing? I just add a bunch of it to the frying pan when the eggs are about half-fried, and let it wilt down. (Sizzled butter, free-range eggs in, add some sage leaves, sliced garlic, chilli if liked, get everything cooking along, add spinach, dish everything and smother in grated parmesan – delicious 3-min meal.)
